As Dr Umar Khalid completes 1,000 days behind bars, it is the justice system which is on trial
Dr Umar Khalid, who has been languishing in prison for his alleged seditious speech during the Delhi riots, completed 1,000 days in prison yesterday. Of the days gone by, he must have spent some grieving over the loss of his life as a young doctorate scholar. He must have spent others mulling over the time he could not spend with his family and friends. He may walk free someday, perhaps even without being convicted, but will not be able to get back these crucial days, months and years. In an event held yesterday to mark the day, Journalist Ravish Kumar remarked that people sitting in the top chairs of the judiciary in India often mention the plight of undertrials and the need to improve the legal system, but fail to act when it comes to cases like that of Dr Khalid.
