J&K HC orders protection to the woman allegedly threatened by relatives for converting to Islam

The Leaflet

The Jammu and Kashmir High Court on July 20 directed the State police to provide protection to a woman who out of her own free will, converted her religion/faith to Islam and adopted a Muslim name as Fatima.

In her plea, Fatima contended that ever since she converted to Islam, her relatives are continuously threatening her to renounce Islam and revert back to her original religion, i.e., Hinduism.  She added that her life has been made miserable by her relatives who are creating a fear psychosis in the mind of her and have given her ultimatum that in case she would not revert back to Hinduism she would be eliminated.

On June 20, 2020, the petitioner had also filed an application before the Station House Officer (SHO) Police Station, Kishtwar, seeking protection, however, nothing substantial was done.

Fatima further contended that she is not being allowed to freely profess and propagate her religion, thereby resulting in violation of her fundamental rights as enshrined under the Constitution of India.

After hearing the plea, Justice Ali Mohammad Magrey ordered interim police protection to the petitioner and issued the notice in the matter.

The next date of hearing has been fixed for August 24.
