[dropcap]T[/dropcap]HE Supreme Court of India has dismissed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) challenging the decision of the Arvind Kejriwal-led Government of NCT of Delhi to install CCTV cameras in classrooms.

The matter was heard by a three-judge bench comprising the Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi, Justices Deepak Gupta and Aniruddha Bose which said on July 12, 2019,"We are not inclined to pass any interim order at this stage".

Invoking the right to privacy among other things to challenge the decision to install the CCTV cameras, petitioner Amber Tickoo, a third-year law student, had submitted before the court that adolescent students would be traumatised with such an arrangement in classrooms.

The court had on May 10, 2019, also issued notice on an interim prayer seeking an immediate stay on the decision to install around 1.5 lakh CCTV cameras in classrooms.

Last year, the Delhi government's Expenditure Finance Committee (EFC) had approved the installation of around 1.46 lakh CCTV cameras in state-run schools, a move aimed at ensuring the safety of students.
