Justice Sujoy Paul recommended for appointment as Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court

Justice Paul’s appointment recommendation trails the appointment of several chief justices across High Courts earlier this month.

THE SUPREME COURT COLLEGIUM has recommended the appointment of Justice Sujoy Paul as the regular Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court. 

Justice Paul has been discharging the functions of Acting Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court with effect from October 8, 2025.

Justice Paul hails from the Madhya Pradesh High Court and is slated to retire on June 20, 2026.

He was appointed as a judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court on May 27, 2011.

On February 13, 2024, the Supreme Court Collegium had recommended his transfer to the Telangana High Court on his request, as his son was practising at the Madhya Pradesh High Court.

On May 26, 2025, the Collegium decided to transfer him from the Telangana High Court to the Calcutta High Court. He has been serving at the Calcutta High Court since July 18, 2025.

Justice Paul hails from the Madhya Pradesh High Court and is slated to retire on June 20, 2026.

A month of Chief Justice appointments across High Courts

Earlier this month, the Union of India notified the appointments of Chief Justices to various High Courts. Justice A. Muhamed Mustaque was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Sikkim High Court.

Justice Revati Mohite-Dere from the Bombay High Court was appointed as Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court. The incumbent Chief Justice there, Justice Soumen Sen, was transferred to the Kerala High Court as Chief Justice.

Justice Sangam Kumar Sahoo from the Orissa High Court was appointed as Chief Justice of the Patna High Court.

Justice M.S. Sonak, a Judge of the Bombay High Court, was appointed as Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court.

Justice Manoj Kumar Gupta, a Judge of the Allahabad High Court, was appointed as Chief Justice of the Uttarakhand High Court.
