THE Delhi High Court Friday designated a total of 55 lawyers as senior advocates. Of them, six are women.
A full court of the High Court, on the administrative side, passed a resolution approving the 55 names for the senior gown today.
Delhi Government's standing counsel Rahul Mehra, human rights lawyer Nitya Ramakrishnan, Saurabh Kripal whose name is also being considered for judgeship, advocate Sanjoy Ghose, a specialist in labour law, are among those who have been conferred the senior designation.
Advocate Siddharth Aggarwal, a specialist in criminal law, has also been conferred the senior advocate distinction.
According to reports, Saurabh Kirpal secured the votes of all 31 judges of Delhi High Court, followed by Rahul Mehra who received 30 votes.
Speaking to The Leaflet, Kripal said "It's humbling that the bench has recommended my name unanimously. The Delhi High Court has always been a beacon of justice, liberty and fraternity. I believe that these principles in our preamble will always be in safe hands with the bench".
Kirpal was recommended for elevation as a judge by the Delhi High Court Collegium on October 13, 2017. However, the Supreme Court Collegium has deferred the proposal of his elevation twice.
A total of 237 advocates were called for an interview.
The process of conferring the senior designation is in line with the Supreme Court's decision in Indira Jaising vs. Registrar, Supreme Court, where the top court ruled that the process of designation would be dealt with by a committee that would follow a point-based system for the assessment of applications.
