ON JULY 14, the Union Government notified the appointment of Chief Justices to the High Courts of Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Gauhati, Patna, and Jharkhand. Additionally, it reshuffled Chief Justices among four High Courts, transferring them from one High Court to another.
Justice Sachdeva will be helming the Madhya Pradesh HC
Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva has been appointed as Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court.
Justice Sachdeva hails from the Delhi High Court and was transferred to the Madhya Pradesh High Court on May 31, 2024. He has been functioning as Acting Chief Justice there since the retirement of Chief Justice Suresh Kait on May 23, 2025.
Justice Sachdeva was appointed as a judge of the Delhi High Court on April 17, 2013, and is slated to retire on December 25, 2026.
Justice Vibhu Bakhru to Karnataka HC
Justice Vibhu Bakhru of the Delhi High Court was appointed as Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court. Justice Bakhru is currently the senior-most judge in the Delhi High Court. He was appointed as a judge there on April 17, 2013, and is slated to retire on November 1, 2028.
Additionally, it reshuffled Chief Justices among four High Courts, transferring them from one High Court to another.
Gauhati HC to be captained by Justice Ashutosh Kumar
Justice Ashutosh Kumar of the Patna High Court was appointed as Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court. He has been functioning as Acting Chief Justice there since January 16, 2025, when the then-incumbent Chief Justice K. Vinod Chandran was appointed to the Supreme Court. Justice Kumar was appointed as a judge of the Patna High Court on May 15, 2014, and is slated to retire on September 30, 2028.
Justice V.M. Pancholi to Patna
Justice Vipul Manubhai Pancholi was appointed as Chief Justice of the Patna High Court. Justice Pancholi, originally from the Gujarat High Court, has been on transfer to the Patna High Court since July 24, 2023. He was appointed as an additional judge of the Gujarat High Court on October 1, 2014, and is slated to retire on May 27, 2030.
Justice T.S. Chauhan to helm the Jharkhand HC
Justice Tarlok Singh Chauhan, a judge of the Himachal Pradesh High Court, has been appointed as Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court. The incumbent Chief Justice of Jharkhand, M.S. Ramachandra Rao, was transferred to the Tripura High Court, while the Chief Justice of the Tripura High Court, Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh, was transferred to the Telangana High Court. Justice Chauhan was appointed as a judge of the Himachal Pradesh High Court on February 23, 2014, and is slated to retire on January 8, 2026.
Justice Manindra Mogan Shrivastava will be chief of the Madras HC
Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava, currently serving as Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court, has been transferred to the Madras High Court as its Chief Justice, while the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court, Justice K.R. Shriram, was transferred to the Rajasthan High Court as its Chief Justice.
The collegium, comprising Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai and Justices Surya Kant and Vikram Nath, made these recommendations in late May this year.
