[dropcap]T[/dropcap]HE Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) has told the National Green Tribunal (NGT) that illegal brick kilns in the Modinagar and Muradnagar area in District Ghaziabad will pay compensation for the pollution they have caused in the area on the lines of the "polluter pays" principle.
A factual report furnished by the District Magistrate and UPPCB stated that out of 42 brick kilns in the area, 25 were found to be operating without the valid consent of the UPPCB and action had been taken against these defaulting kilns. The District Magistrate and UPPCB also informed the Tribunal that closure orders had been issued against the 25 brick kilns.
The NGT panel comprising of Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel, Judicial Members S P Wangdi and K Ramakrishnan, and Expert Member DR Nagin Nanda asked the UPPCB to file an "action taken report" before the Tribunal before October 30, 2019.
