Himachal Pradesh river beds being used as dumping ground for road construction debris

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]HE National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed various state authorities in Himachal Pradesh to report on the remedial measures being taken against the dumping of road construction debris in the rivers and forests in the state.

An NGT panel headed by Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel directed the Himachal Pradesh State Pollution Control Board (HPSPCB) to be the nodal agency for compliance and coordination while working in concert with the Secretary, PWD, Himachal Pradesh, (HPSPCB) and and Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (PCCF) to furnish the report within two months.

The NGT panel was hearing a petition filed by a Rajiv Verma against the dumping of road construction debris in the river beds in Himachal Pradesh, contending that the state PWD was failing to enforce statutory requirements to check illegal dumping of construction waste.
