THE Delhi High Court last week re-united a newly wedded couple after it allowed the release of the petitioner’s husband who was illegally detained by his family members.
A division bench of Justices Siddharth Mridul and AJ Bhambani also directed the Station House Officer (SHO), Police Station (PS) Najafgarh to escort Pankaj Rathi, the husband of the petitioner to her residence in Jaffarpur.
The bench also ordered adequate security for the newly-wed couple and the provision of the SHO’s mobile telephone number, to enable them to call the police in the event of any threat or apprehension of one.
It said the beat constable of the area must also be sensitised about the matter and his telephone number also be provided to the couple.
The bench was ruling on a habeas corpus petition filed by the wife seeking the release of her husband from the illegal custody of the latter’s relatives.
During the hearing, the court interacted with the husband, who said that he and petitioner had married on January 1 this year at the Arya Samaj Mandir, Uttam Nagar, New Delhi, of their own free will and volition; and that he would like to be reunited with her.
The husband also expressed his apprehension as to his safety and wellbeing, as also that of his wife in view of the threats from members of his immediate family.
The petitioner also told the court that ever since she had complained to the DCP, she was being coerced to withdraw the complaint or face dire consequences.
