When I reflect upon
Happy school days divine
I find that our toppers
Didn't necessarily shine
They have prospered in life
Who in class were all at sea
While those who stood first
Couldn't even clear UPSC!
The laggard who with his
Homework was always late
Overtook all competition
To head a giant corporate
The one they teased a lot
Our local grocer's son
Now commands a chain
Of provision stores they run
Bullies who threatened us
With blows and kicks
Found their safe houses
In parties and politics
The topper in maths
Didn't find time to relax
And predictably joined
Department of Income Tax
With wives and children
Most lived lives sans tension
Served rich others, retired
Now satisfied with pension
Because I wanted change
Did not like what I saw
I joined a "noble profession"
And chose the path of law
We'd sit on benches to learn
Milords sit on Benches to teach
There's no dearth of good laws
But justice is still beyond reach
The point of all this elaboration
The real story I wanted to tell
Is that our toppers fell behind
But our duffers have done well.
