Yamuna Flood Plains: NGT disposes of Delhi Government application seeking directions to create reservoirs

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]HE National Green Tribunal (NGT) has disposed of an application filed by the Delhi Government relating to the creation of water bodies and reservoirs in the Yamuna Flood Plain area on the ground that only a “concerned statutory authority” would be able to consider the merits of the project in accordance with “laid down procedure”.

The Irrigation and Flood Control Department of the Delhi Government had filed an application before the NGT for directions to create water reservoirs in the Yamuna Flood Plain by retaining the river’s excess flood-water during the monsoon season for recharging the groundwater from Palla to Wazirabad in Delhi.

While the Tribunal can have no objection to any legitimate project which does not interfere with the rejuvenation of river Yamuna and the protection of its flood plains, it cannot express its opinion on the merits of such projects, an NGT panel headed by Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel said.
