Supreme Court rejects fresh PIL seeking to link social media accounts with Aadhaar

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]HE Supreme Court on Monday declined to entertain a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by BJP leader cum lawyer Ashwini Upadhyay seeking mandatory linking of social media accounts with Aadhaar.

Justice Deepak Gupta on the bench along-with Justice Surya Kant observed that the similar matter is pending in the Madras High Court and everything cannot come before the apex court. The petitioner has been, therefore, granted liberty to approach the High Court.

A bench headed by Justice Deepak Gupta is also hearing a petition filed by the Facebook and WhatsApp seeking transfer of all cases related to the linkage of individual social media accounts with 12 digits Aadhaar number, from various high courts to itself. Those transfer petitions are slated to be heard on October 22, 2019.

The petitions filed before the Madras High Court sought mandatory linkage between peoples’ Aadhaar card – the Government’s already controversial biometric ID for Indian citizens – with their Whatsapp accounts.
