[dropcap]T[/dropcap]HE Parliament of India today passed 'The Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization Bill, 2019' that seeks to bifurcate the State of Jammu and Kashmir thereby forming a new Union territory to be known as the Union territory of Ladakh comprising "Kargil and Leh districts", and Union territory to be known as the Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir comprising the territories of the existing State of Jammu and Kashmir other than Kargil and Leh.
The Bill was considered by the Lok Sabha today, which passed it by majority of 376 votes whereas 67 votes were cast against the Bill.
A total of 125 MPs voted in favour of the Bill in Rajya Sabha yesterday. 61 MPs voted against it. One MP chose to abstain from voting.
The Bill also provides that until the area of the Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir under the occupation of Pakistan ceases to be so occupied and the people residing in that area elect their representatives:
The Bill will now be sent to the President of India for his assent. Once the assent of the President is received, the Bill will become the law, and its provisions will come into effect on a date to be notified by the Central Government.
