Justice NV Ramana set to become 48th Chief Justice of India

Outgoing Chief Justice of India (CJI) SA Bobde Wednesday recommended the name of senior-most judge Justice NV Ramana as his successor.

Justice Ramana is set to take the oath of office of CJI on April 24. He will be the 48th CJI.

He was appointed as judge of the Supreme Court on February 17, 2014, and will be retiring on August 26, 2022.

Earlier, the Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, in consonance with the existing Memorandum of Procedure (MoP) sought the name of the next CJI from the incumbent CJI SA Bobde.

Justice Ramana hails from the Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh. He was enrolled as an Advocate on February 10, 1983, and started practice in the High Court of Andhra Pradesh.

He was appointed as a Permanent Judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court on June 27, 2000. He functioned as Acting Chief Justice of the Andhra Pradesh High Court from March 10, 2013 to May 20, 2013. From there, he was appointed as the Chief Justice of Delhi High Court w.e.f. 02.09.2013. He was elevated as a Judge, Supreme Court of India w.e.f. 17.02.2014.
