[dropcap]T[/dropcap]HE Union Home Ministry today informed the Lok Sabha that as reported by Delhi Police, three cases had been registered by Delhi Police against the mob, who were found involved in unlawful activities and defacing the public property while protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in the area at and around Jamia Millia University.

It further informed that Delhi Police had arrested a total of 15 persons. 62 Police personnel and 127 persons, including 36 students, were injured.

"As reported by Delhi Police, they entered the University Campus chasing the violent congregation of students/ mob, to nab/ disperse the offenders, control the situation and to protect the Government property as well as saving the lives of innocent students residing in the Campus area", said MoS (Home) G. Kishan Reddy in his written reply.

In response to query the details of the cases registered against students in various universities in connection with the protest against CAA, the Home Ministry said no central database of such cases is maintained.

On 13-14 December 2019, Delhi Police had entered the Jamia Millia Islamia's campus and detained several students for alleged involvement in violent protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

At Jamia, there were many students who had to be taken to hospitals after they were injured in the clash. Some students were paraded outside the campus by cops with their hands raised.

On December 17, 2019, the Delhi High Court had issued notice to the Central Government, Delhi Police and Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) seeking their response on a batch of a petition seeking an independent probe into the police action and no coercive action against students who have been named in multiple FIRs.  The matter was heard today again when the Centre and Delhi police sought three-weeks time to file their respective replies.

The High Court accordingly adjourned the matter to April 29, 2020
