Central Pollution Control Board asked to act towards plastic waste management

[dropcap]N[/dropcap]ATIONAL Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) to restrict the import of hazardous waste and to strictly implement the plastic waste management mechanism.

The NGT panel headed by its chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel said that mere submission of a report by CPCB cannot be taken as adequate action. The panel said apart from issuance of direction, compliance of direction is required to be overseen.

It was hearing a petition filed by Amit Jain who had approached the green tribunal for remedial action against cheap waste paper and road sweep waste imported for firing of brick kilns.

Jain brought in the notice of the panel that 90000 tons of this imported waste is hazardous.

The report submitted by the CPCB acknowledged that there is no proper mechanism for plastic waste management which was being dumped in open or burnt in brick kilns resulting in pollution.

The panel also directed the CPCB to take up the matter of management of hazard waste with the concerned authorities being a statutory regulator.
