Delhi High Court issues summons in a suit to restrain streaming of ‘Hasmukh’ for allegedly maligning the image and reputation of lawyers

THE Delhi High Court on April 27 issued the summons in a suit seeking to restrain Netflix from airing the episodes of web series ‘Hasmukh’ for allegedly maligning the image and reputation of lawyers.

A single-judge bench of Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva issued summons to the Netflix and makers of the web series, Hasmukh and directed them to file their written submissions.

The suit was filed by a lawyer Ashutosh Dubey alleging that in episode 4 of the web series, lawyers have been referred to as thieves, scoundrels, goons and rapists. According to him, these statements are highly disparaging, defamatory and bring disrepute to the profession of law, and lawyers and advocates in the eyes of the general public.

On the interim injunction against the web series, the High Court reserved the order. It directed parties to file their brief note of written submissions by April 28.
