Centre notifies appointments of new Chief Justices of the Bombay HC, Meghalaya HC and Orissa HC

THE Central Government on Thursday notified the appointment of Calcutta High Court judge Justice Dipankar Datta and Allahabad High Court judge Justice Biswanath Somadde as the Chief Justices of the Bombay High Court and Meghalaya High Court respectively. It also notified the transfer of Meghalaya High Court’s Chief Justice Mohammad Rafiq as the Chief Justice of Orissa High Court.

The Supreme Court Collegium had made the recommendation to this effect on April 18, 2020.

Justice Dipankar is the senior-most judge in the Calcutta High Court presently after Chief Justice T B Radhakrishnan. He was elevated to the Bench of the High Court at Calcutta as a permanent Judge on June 22, 2006. As a High Court judge, he is due to retire on February 8, 2027

Allahabad High Court judge Justice Biswanath Somadde (parent HC at Calcutta) was elevated to the Bench of the High Court at Calcutta as a permanent Judge on June 22, 2006. He is in the office of the judge of the Allahabad HC since October 17, 2019. As a High Court judge, he is due to retire on December 14, 2025.

Justice Mohammad Rafiq was elevated as a judge of the Rajasthan High Court on May 15, 2006. As a High Court judge, he is due to retire on May 24, 2022
