The Leaflet is looking out for a staff writer and researcher, a position based out of the New Delhi office.
The ideal staff writer and researcher of The Leaflet is someone who keeps an ear to the ground on contemporary developments on law and policy issues, and possesses a sharp perspective on political and social issues with legal consequences. This means keeping a vigilant eye on not only the happenings inside the courtroom, such as hearings on constitutional matters and Collegium decisions, but also on how the law plays out beyond the courts - stories of rights violations, individuals asserting for justice, or the human consequences of case strategies.
Roles and responsibilities:
• The staff writer and researcher is expected to contribute writing for The Leaflet’s website which are in the nature of court reports, ground reports and analytical articles. This means attending court hearings in major matters of public and constitutional interest, and preparing precise and comprehensive reports. It also means producing in-depth reports on legal stories based on interviews, investigations and comprehensive research. The staff writer may also contribute well-researched legally analysed commentary with a novel bent on ongoing discourse.
• The staff writer and researcher is expected to research on various legal issues relevant to publications on The Leaflet. As part of this, the role will also entail conducting regular fact-checks on drafts prior to publication.
• The staff writer and researcher is also expected to provide hands-on editorial support, which would include copy-editing and occasional substantive edit work.
Remuneration:
The compensation for the position will be commensurate with the experience and work.
Eligibility:
• You are an ideal person for the role if you have at least two years of work experience as a legal journalist or as a legal researcher. Familiarity with court procedures, various disciplines of the law, and legal research is desirable. Candidates with prior journalism experience, including in reporting and fact-checking are desirable.
• The ideal candidate may have an undergraduate degree in law. Candidates with degrees in journalism, or related disciplines are also encourage to apply.
• Candidates from marginalised communities, including Dalit, Bahujan, Adivasi, De-notified tribes, and minority communities, as well as women, gender minorities, and people with disabilities are encouraged to apply.
As part of a small, but growing team at The Leaflet, inclined to expand our coverage on both cutting edge legal opinion, and in-depth reporting on the law, the staff writer and researcher would be at the heart of the newsroom, and poised for legal journalism with a passionate bend, one that aligns with our founding vision of ‘Constitution First’.
