President Ram Nath Kovind on Thursday appointed former Union minister and BJP leader Manoj Sinha as the next Lieutenant Governor (LG) of Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. He will replace Girish Chandra Murmu who resigned on Wednesday.
Sinha, a civil engineer from Banaras Hindu University (BHU) has been a member of the national council of the BJP and was first elected to the Lok Sabha in 1996. He was re-elected to the Lok Sabha in 1999 and 2014.
During the first term of the Modi Government, Sinha served as the Union Minister of State in the Ministry of Railways.
In the last general elections to the Lok Sabha, Sinha lost to the BSP candidate Afzal Ansari from the Ghazipur constituency in eastern Uttar Pradesh.
