Supreme Court relaxes dress code requirements for lawyers; does away with the black gown for the time being

THE Supreme Court of India on Wednesday relaxed the dress-code requirements for the lawyers appearing before it.

Considering the medical advice, the Secretary-General of the apex court in a circular has said as a precautionary measure to contain spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19) infection under the prevailing conditions, advocates may wear “plain white-shirt/white-salwar-kameez/ white saree, with a plain white neckband” during the hearings before the Supreme Court of India through Virtual Court System till medical exigencies exist or until further orders.

Now the lawyers would no longer need to wear the black gown for the time being. The notice has been issued with the approval of the Chief Justice of India.
