[dropcap]T[/dropcap]HE Madras High Court today granted 30 days parole to S Nalini, a life convict in the case of the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, to enable her to make arrangements for her daughter’s wedding.

A Division Bench of the Madras High Court comprising Justices M M Sundaresh and M Nirmal Kumar granted parole to Nalini on condition that she would not meet politicians or give interviews to the media and would adhere to the regulations provided under the Tamil Nadu Prison Manual.

She will also have to provide details of her sureties within a week and the sureties’ authenticity will have to be verified within ten days before the parole can commence, according to the high court order.

The court has also directed the Tamil Nadu government to bear the expenses for providing escorts to Nalini as she had no means to pay for the facility on account of her incarceration for over 27 years.

Nalini who appeared in person before the high court had prayed for six months parole. The state government opposed the request saying the rules permitted the granting of leave for a maximum period of 30 days only.

Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated in May 1991 by suicide bombers of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) during an election rally at Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu. Besides Nalini, six others, including her husband Murugan, a Sri Lankan national, are serving life imprisonment in the case.
