[dropcap]S[/dropcap]UCHARITA Sen, Professor of Geography at the Centre for Study Regional Development, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), who was severely injured during the violence unleashed by a gang of 70 to 100 masked assailants on the JNU campus on Sunday evening, has filed a complaint with the Station House Officer (SHO), Police Station Vasant Kunj North, New Delhi.

She has sought registration of the FIR under Sections 307 (Attempt to murder), 325 (Punishment for voluntarily causing grievous hurt), 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means), 147(Punishment for rioting) 148 (Rioting, armed with deadly weapon), 149 (Every member of unlawful assembly guilty of offence commit¬ted in prosecution of common object). 425 (Mischief) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC)

In her complaint, filed through advocate Tara Narula, Professor Sen has given a detailed account of the incident of violence carried out on JNU campus by “masked goons”.

“I have injuries to my head, shoulder and thighs and have also got myself treated subsequently at AIIMS Trauma Centre”, said Professor Sucharita in her complaint.

She has also stated that generally no outside persons are allowed inside JNU Campus, yet somehow a large number of persons were permitted entry into campus overtly carrying weapons.

“In fact my colleague Shukla Sawant had sent a WhatsApp message to the Chief Security Officer regarding the unlawful assembly that had gathered, which she shared with me, but the Chief Security Officer only told her to call the police and chose not to act despite the fact that students and teachers were being attacked on campus, which was under purview of his duty”, said Prof Sen.

The complaint by Prof Sen also stated that the mob also destroyed her car, which was standing on Sabarmati Road.

“Persons some masked and with covered faces had congregated within the JNU campus with lathis, sticks, rods, bricks, stones and other deadly weapons which would be sufficient to cause death or grievous injury in the normal course of events”, Professor Sucharita asserted in her complaint.

She also mentioned the series wise event of the incident of violence in her complaint and asked the Delhi Police to preserve the CCTV footages from across the JNU campus.

Prof. Sen further said that the campus is filled with CCTV cameras near all major buildings and the entry and exit gates, and she requested to immediately preserve the said footages, as the same would show the ingress, egress and violence acts of the unlawful assembly.

As per media reports, at least 26 students and teachers were injured after masked men wielding sticks, rods and sledgehammers terrorised JNU for close to three hours on Sunday evening. Eyewitnesses and many of those injured said the men, who as per some estimates numbered around 100, were mostly outsiders and belonged to the ABVP — a charge the RSS student outfit denied.
