NGT asks Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation to do its job

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]HE National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation to stop discharging untreated sewage into drains and to furnish a compliance report before the next date of hearing.

The NGT was responding to a petition filed by the Resident Welfare Association of Avantika Colony in Ghaziabad for remedial action against the discharge of untreated sewage in open drains.

The Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) in a report submitted to the NGT at the hearing said that untreated sewer water was being pumped out and discharged into open drains and even though a sewerage network had been constructed, the lack of maintenance by the municipal corporation had caused them to choke. The Board said it had calculated the environmental damage caused by the municipal corporation’s negligence at Rs. 99,12,109, which it had asked the latter to pay.

The NGT panel headed by Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel also directed the Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation to take necessary action to prevent the discharge of untreated sewage into the drains which flowed into the river Hindan and thereafter river Ganga.
