Justice Madan Lokur takes oath as Judge Fiji Supreme Court

[dropcap]F[/dropcap]ORMER Supreme Court Justice Madan Lokur took his oath to become a judge of the Supreme Court of Fiji this Monday, August 12, 2019. His term on Fiji Supreme Court’s non-resident panel is slated to begin August 15, 2019.

During his swearing-in ceremony, Justice Madan Lokur took his oath on the Bhagavad Gita.

Fiji’s SC has three terms a year. Justice Lokur’s will be from August 15 to August 30, 2019

During this time, Justice Lokur will spend two to three weeks in a year to hear cases in an appellate capacity. He will sit together with judges of the Supreme Court of Fiji. Over the years, the Supreme Court of Fiji has invited Judges from another country, including Singapore, South Africa, Malaysia, New Zealand, Australia and Sri Lanka.

Justice Madan B Lokur was elevated to the Supreme Court of India on June 4, 2012, and retired on December 31, 2018, after a tenure of more than six years. He was the presiding judge of the Social Justice Bench and exclusively heard public interest petitions, primarily related to social-economic matters.

Justice Lokur was responsible for giving an impetus to human rights jurisprudence covering the right to food, shelter, health, dignity and livelihood. He is lauded for his work in protecting the Aravalli Hills, the Taj Mahal and hauling up industries for large-scale pollution.
