Justice Lokur goes to Fiji

[dropcap]R[/dropcap]ETIRED Supreme Court Judge, Justice Madan B Lokur has been appointed Judge of Appeal of the Supreme Court of Fiji on its non-resident panel. The appointment will be for a period of three years, starting on August 15, 2019.

The Supreme Court of Fiji has three sessions in a year. Justice Lokur will attend the August session and will spend two to three weeks in a year to hear cases in an appellate capacity. He will sit together with judges of the Supreme Court of Fiji.

Over the years, the Supreme Court of Fiji has invited Judges from other country, including Singapore, South Africa, Malaysia, New Zealand, Australia and Sri Lanka.

Justice Madan B Lokur was elevated to the Supreme Court of India on June 4, 2012 and retired on December 31, 2018, after a tenure of more than six years. He was the presiding judge of the Social Justice Bench and exclusively heard public interest petitions, primarily related to social-economic matters.

Justice Lokur was responsible for giving an impetus to human rights jurisprudence covering the right to food, shelter, health, dignity and livelihood. He is lauded for his work in  protecting the Aravalli Hills, the Taj Mahal and hauling up industries for large-scale pollution.
