Prof. Baruah is the Academic Adviser of Assam School of Journalism and also the Assam Institute of Mass Communication and Media Research, Assam. He is the president of Sustha Samaj Bikash Chakr, a non- party organizations of Intellectuals and Social Activists. He is former Dean of School of Social Sciences and a former Head and Professor of the Department of Political Science, North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong, Meghalaya, India.
