Lokpal Search Committee issues advertisement inviting applications, nominations for preparing a panel of names for the chairperson and members of Lokpal

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]HE chairperson of the Search Committee constituted under the The Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act, 2013, Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, has invited applications/nominations for preparation of panel of names for consideration by Selection Committee for appointment as chairperson & Members of Lokpal.

The applications/nomination should reach to the Search Committee latest by February 22, 2019.

The Applicant/the person nominated shall not be less than 45 years of age on the date of assuming the office of the chairperson or member, as the case may be, says the advertisement issued by the Search Committee.

 

The advertisement has come in the backdrop of the Supreme Court’s order in a contempt petition against the Central Government for its inaction on the appointment of Lokpal. The Supreme Court on  January 17, 2019 had asked the Search Committee to commence and complete its deliberations and recommend a panel as required under Rule 11 of the Search Committee (Constitution, Terms and Conditions of Appointment of Members and the Manner of Selection of Panel of Names for Appointment of Chairperson and Members of Lokpal) Rules, 2014 by the end of February, 2019.

Court had asked also directed the central government to make available requisite infrastructure, man-power, secretarial assistance, etc. to enable the Search Committee to commence its working immediately and conclude the same within the time frame fixed by the Court. The said contempt petition is listed for hearing on March 7, 2019.

 

 

The Central government had formed the Search Committee on September 27, 2018 with the following persons — Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai as its Chairperson, Justice Sakha Ram Singh Yadav, Ranjit Kumar, Arundhati Bhattacharya,  Dr. Lalit K. Panwar, Shabbirhusein S. Khandwawala,  A. Surya Prakash and  Dr. A.S. Kiran Kumar — as its members.

 

The eligibility criteria for the post of chairperson of Lokpal and its members prescribed in the said advertisement issued by the Search Committee is same as that of provided in the The Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act, 2013.

Further, the advertisement says that the applicant/the person nominated shall not be-

  • A person convicted of any offence involving moral turpitude.
  • A person who has been removed or dismissed from the service of union of state.
  • Affiliated with any political party.
